CONTINUUM: Niniko Morbedadze
CH64 Gallery is pleased to present Continuum, an exhibition of works created by Niniko Morbedadze between 2020 and 2022. The show’s title speaks simultaneously to the artist’s creative practice, and her persepction of the alternate reality manifested in her pieces. The show’s concept was born out of the time the artist took for introspection during the tumultuous period around the world.
Continuum references the subtlety in the evolution of Niniko’s oeuvre over the years. Her palette moves from subdued earthy tones to brighter, more pigmented colours. The old, familiar inhabitants of the seaside town, recognisable from previous iterations of her dreamscapes, are now accompanied by unfamiliar newcomers, often sporting botanical or earthenware-inspired headdresses and attire. By carving life into rock and stone in the Ancient Histories series Niniko entirely negates the notion of restriction and boundary, there is only continuity. Shaping vast expanses of landscape using themes of nature and architecture, the artist offers an outlet away from the claustrophobic reality of physical and mental borders and barriers.
Through her body of work, Niniko allows us to observe the development of a universe parallel to ours, naturally executing this progression having created alternate laws of nature and time. Her pieces are snapshots, distinct but infinitely connected parts of a single continuous whole, chronicling an existence on a plane conjured up from her subconscious, intractable and in permanent flux. Changes in Niniko’s work occur at a slow, almost imperceptible pace, but the distance between her earlier pieces to those presented in this show, while understated, is vast. She makes full use of the unlimited possibilities inherent in Surrealism.
